Episode 82 Transcript

Heather (00:05.302)

Well, hello and welcome to episode 82. Today, I wanna tell you a little story. Now, I live in the northern beaches of New South Wales outside of Sydney in Australia. And down the hill from me, roughly 15 to 20 minute drive is an area called Manly. I used to laugh when I first moved here about the name Manly.

But yeah, it's called Manly. It's a beach. It's a beautiful beach. I wanna describe it to you. Just so you understand a little bit about this community. So on one side, it has like a wharf and it actually has a wharf that goes out into the ocean where the ships come in basically. So there's ferries that take you from Manly across the harbor into Sydney sort of CBD circular key area.

So there's this wharf where the ferries come in and out, where you can hire boats and paddle boats, and a lot of teenagers will jump off the wharf into the water. There's all these amazing restaurants there. There's one called the Manly Wharf Bar, or the Wharfie, as the locals call it, where families go during the days and then has a beautiful deck at night where there's live music and drinks overlooking the water. So that's one side.

The other side's the beach, an incredibly long sprawl. You have the ocean pools, which in Australia, I didn't know these existed until I lived here, but basically it's an area of the ocean on the shore that's sort of cemented off into a pool, like an actual pool that you can swim in. And it's fueled by the ocean waves. So yes, they drain them every now and again, but.

That's how it's basically filled up is from the ocean waves. So we have the ocean pool. We have this incredible beach loads of lifeguard Areas throughout the beach because it's so long You have some high rises of hotels and Apartments you have homes given a really cool area called the Corso, which is where you can go shopping It has all the bars and the pubs and the restaurants and the shops

It's for foot traffic, you know, and so they have like little fountains, they have markets on the weekends. So it's a community in Sydney, but it's his own community nonetheless. And it's gorgeous. I mean, you have the beach culture and you have professionals commuting in and out of the city on the ferry, but it is its own little pocket of loveliness in New South Wales in Australia. So that's Manly. Now I want to tell you about a guy actually named Guy.

So this man's name is Guy Dunstan and he is a manly local. Now this guy goes out and takes the temperature of the ocean every single morning at 4 a.m. That's crazy, that's early. I mean, I am amazed. But every single morning, Guy goes down and takes the temperature of the ocean.

And he uses that temperature to draw a chalk, basically chalk drawings. So he has this little area on most of the areas or beaches in Australia that you have the beach and then you have like a wall that comes. And then on the other side of the wall, you have like a path, like the walkway where everyone rides bikes and everything. So on areas around the wall that divides the beach with the walkway area, he draws the temperature with chalk.

colored chalk and he draws different pictures, like really cute little pictures. So he'll have the temperature of the ocean and then like a little chalk drawing around it. And he even puts hidden messages inside of the drawing to his community, which is manly, of course. Now I heard him speak on a video not too long ago and this man was so passionate. I was just...

blown away, so passionate about something so simple that he does every single day. And he always wakes up because he knows he's making a difference. You can hear it in his voice, you guys, when he talks, when he's explaining what he does, he just knows he's making a difference, whether it's the hidden messages in the chalk drawings or just the fact that people have come to know him and expect this.

Heather (04:47.138)

fun little drawing that he does and also to know the ocean temperature because swimming in Australia is a big thing even in winter. So after hearing this story, I wanted to talk to you guys about it because I think that there's a few things that Guy can teach all of us. The number one thing is your purpose does not have to mean you change the world. It does not. Your purpose can be that you help one person.

every single day or a community like Guy, right? But the key here is that you find something that makes you smile, that makes you feel like you are making a difference, that fuels your soul, and that makes you want to bounce out of bed on most days. Now I don't know you guys if I found anything that makes me want to get out of bed at 4am, but Guy, hats off to you.

So what is it friends for you? What fuels your soul? And more importantly, are you doing it? All right, thanks for tuning in as always. Very, very grateful. Talk to you soon. Bye guys.
